Case Studies in the Art of Prince Charming: K

KEVIN DOYLE

marsden27dressesWhen I started planning out this list, Kevin was actually the first character I considered. He’s such a shining example of a well-developed Prince Charming. This movie doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Neither does Kevin.

Series/Book/Movie: 27 Dresses

Who He Loves: Jane Nichols

“Love is patient, love is kind, love means slowly losing your mind.”

You want a flawed Prince Charming? Kevin out-flaws the best of them. He’s a writer who covers all the high society weddings in town. After sharing a post-wedding cab with Jane, he finds her day planner, which she inadvertently left behind. And he snoops through it, making that little book his spyglass into Jane’s life and, in a way, the map to her self-destruction. Kevin uses her, and her bridesmaid addiction, to try to further his career in hopes that he can move away from the socialite section and get in the running with the big dogs. All without her permission. All without her knowing.

Add that to the fact that this cynical man hated marriage as an institution and no longer believed in true love and, well, we’ve got a real winner.

But here’s the thing. He made the mistake of falling in love. It allowed him to not only see the err of his ways with Jane and the article, but it made it to where he could honestly give love a chance. He realizes that Jane is this giving, caring, self-less girl who gets walked all over to the point that she pretty much causes her own heart break. Does he immediately try to win her over? No. He tries to help her grow, which is almost more important than anything else. She gets a backbone because of him, and she’s not the only one doing some growing. We’re able to view his evolution from jerkface to Prince Charming with practically every minute of screen time that he gets.

And also, there’s this:

"Buh-buh-buh-benny and the jets!"

“Buh-buh-buh-benny and the jets!”

  1. I adooore 27 Dresses, though Katherine Heigel annoys me in every other film -_- Probably James Marsden that does it for me, haha :)

Also, when he was Corny Collins in Hairspray… I could rewatch that every day, just to see him sing and dance… *le sigh*
